What the Claude Max API Credit Covers
Does a Claude Max plan include API credit?

Yes. According to Anthropic's help article on monthly API credits, Max 5x includes $100 a month and Max 20x includes $200 a month to spend on the Claude Platform. It is a separate budget for building things. It does not raise your usage limits in Claude or Claude Code.
| Plan | Monthly credit |
|---|---|
| Max 5x | $100 |
| Max 20x | $200 |
| Team, Standard seat | $20 per seat |
| Team, Premium seat | $100 per seat (the team's pool is capped at $500) |
Free, Pro and Enterprise plans are not eligible. The credit has to be claimed, so it doesn't appear on its own.
What the credit covers, and what it doesn't
Anthropic's Claude Platform documentation says the credit applies to any available Claude model on the platform. The line that trips people up is the other side of it.
| Covered | Not covered |
|---|---|
| The Claude API, including Messages and Message Batches | Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the web |
| The Console Playground | Extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork |
| Claude Managed Agents | Claude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry |
| The Claude Agent SDK |
One detail worth knowing: running claude -p yourself with an API key from your linked organization draws on the credit, while running it signed in with your plan uses your plan's limits instead.
How to claim it
When I claimed mine, it was fast: a button and a confirmation click in the app. The steps below are Anthropic's, for reference.
- Be the subscriber. On Max, the person who pays for the plan claims the credit. A new subscriber has to be on the plan for seven days first.
- Open billing. On claude.ai in a browser, go to Settings, then Billing, and find the "API credits" section. This holds even if you subscribed on a phone.
- Link an organization. Choose an existing Claude Console organization or create one, review the credit terms and link it. No card is needed on the Claude Platform to claim or use the credit.
Pick the organization carefully. You can link only one Console organization, each organization can receive credit from only one plan, and you can't change the link yourself afterward. Changing it means contacting support. Using the same email for claude.ai and the Console helps, and if linking errors out, Anthropic suggests trying again in a few hours.
How the credit behaves once you have it
- It expires. Unused credit doesn't roll over. It ends with each billing cycle, and a new amount arrives shortly after your next payment.
- It's spent first. Included credit is used before any credit you've purchased.
- One balance for everyone. Every API key in the linked organization draws from the same pool, so give a risky project its own workspace with a spend limit.
- It can run out. With no other credit on the account, API requests stop until the next grant. The usage is never billed to your Claude plan.
Cancelling, downgrading to an ineligible plan or getting a refund stops new credit, but what you already have stays usable until it expires.
What I'm using mine for
I'm still experimenting, so I don't have a spending figure to give you. So far I'm pointing the credit at jobs that run on my own machines: analyzing the action in video clips, transcribing audio, and trying the model as a go-between for a website and local services that need a judgment call, something like a chatbot-style front end.
My read so far is that the credit is big enough to test seriously and push the boundaries. The approach I'm taking is to let deterministic tools do everything they can and route to the model only when a step needs judgment or analysis. Often the judgment ends up as a plain logical condition based on what the model found, which keeps the model's part small and the rest predictable.
Is it worth using in a small business?
It's worth using if you have something to build. The credit isn't a discount on your subscription, so a month in which you build nothing is a month of expired credit.
Good first uses are repetitive jobs that run in bulk, such as drafting product descriptions, tagging a folder of images or summarizing a stack of customer emails. Before you build any of them, ask whether a plain script would do the job for free; I wrote about that test in Which Decisions to Hand AI, and Which to Keep. And anything an AI builds for you deserves a review as thorough as your goals and time allow, especially anything that handles an API key. Keep keys out of public pages, and set a spend limit on anything that faces the public. If you'd rather run your systems by conversation than build them, Will We Even Need Admin Panels? shows what that looks like.
FAQ
Does the Claude Max API credit work for Claude Code?
Not for interactive Claude Code, which keeps using your plan's usage limits. It applies when you run claude -p or the Agent SDK yourself with an API key from your linked organization.
Do unused API credits roll over?
No. Unused credit expires at the end of each billing cycle.
Can I change the Console organization I linked?
Not yourself. You can link only one organization and the link can't be changed in the app, so you would have to contact Anthropic support.
Do I need a credit card on the Claude Platform?
No. A card isn't needed to claim or use the included credit.
